(October 6, 2014 - Riverhead, NY) Project Fit America* mentors once again visited the district to provide training and to introduce the elementary physical education teachers, who are in their second year of administering the program, to more PFA exercise options . Experienced PFA teachers from all over America take time from their own teaching jobs to consult with teachers new to the program. Also present at the Phillips Avenue location were representatives from the Peconic Bay Medical Center and the Suffolk County Lions Diabetes Education Foundation, who helped make the program possible in our district. With the financial help of PBMC and Suffolk Lions, RCSD was the first district in New York State to win a grant to implement this program, which has both indoor and outdoor components. The indoor program is largely a cardio program with a number of built-in movement motivators and a time for educational instruction. The outside unit acts as an outdoor weight room with seven stations to help students strengthen muscle groups in a systematic manner.

“It is with great appreciation that Riverhead Central School District, the physical education staff, our elementary school principals, and our terrific students accepted the Project Fit America award,” states Bill Groth, the K-12 Athletic, Health and Physical Education Director. “As the first school in New York State to be recipients of this grant and benefit from this program, it is with excitement and
determination that we continue to work with our partners in the fight against obesity and childhood diabetes through education, wellness and physical education. "Project Fit American has been well received by our students and staff," notes Pulaski Physical Education teacher Rebecca Winkel. "The student body shows much excitement when it comes to cup stacking challenges, stations stars, and fitness testing," Ms. Winkel |
continued, "and it was a pleasure having Ken Chambless and his son visit Pulaski Street School for the second PFA professional development training. We received excellent ideas for curriculum enhancement in which our our students will love to participate."
Pulaski Street School PE teachers and students are also proud to share that their skill tests showed an approximate average of 36% improvement in all fitness areas. This is a great improvement rate for Pulaski students just one year into the implementation of the Project Fit America program into the elementary schools." |
*Project Fit America is a national agency that works at the grassroots level with schools and front line educators to create new opportunities for kids to be active, fit and healthy. We believe in fit kids, one school at a time. We work with communities to bring in funding, equipment, teacher training, curriculum and the resources schools need to actually get kids fit and foster a love of movement. When Project Fit America comes to a school, kids never want to miss PE and teachers report they see fantastic changes not just in their students' health, but in their attitude toward fitness and healthy life styles.
